Sheffield has given birth to one of the best underground music scenes the UK has ever seen, producing some of the most successful bands and artists - most notable Arctic Monkeys and Javis Cocker - of the last ten years. Here at Guitar Lessons Sheffield, we are really passionate about supporting up and coming local bands, we also really encourage our guitar students to go and watch as many local gigs as they can as it is a fantastic learning experience. To help our students along we have compiled a list of what we consider to be the best music venues in Sheffield to watch local bands or to gig at. Enjoy! So, in no order...

O2 Academy Sheffield opened in 2008 is now one of the best music venues in Sheffield to go and watch national and internationally famous bands. With the likes of Reverend and the Makers, Beady Eye, Kaiser Chiefs and Lostprophets to name but a few of the acts that have rock local audiences, you should certainly be keeping an eye on who is playing here. The 2,500 capacity music venue located at 37 - 43 Arundel Gate, S1 2PN, is an ideal venue for local bands to support some of the best in the business, up and coming bands can work their way up from the Academy2 with a capacity of 250 to the full venue. You should be knocking the door down to get yourself a gig at the O2 Academy2 - fantastic venue & perfect for local bands.

Leadmill is another multi-award winning venue located at 6 Leadmill Road, S1 4SE. With the likes of Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes having graced the stage, learning the tricks of the trade, it is certainly a venue for you to get yourself to. You will be witnessing some of the best bands in the UK underground music scene, with some no doubt rising to national fame over the next few years. Voted the Best Live Music Venue by NME readers Leadmill, opened way back in 1980, is steeped in music history. Great venue to gig or watch some amazing bands, see you in the front row.

The Plug has seen the likes of Prodigy, Lilly Allen and even Patti Smith delivering poetry on stage is yet another fantastic music venue in Sheffield. Located at 14-16 Matilda Street, S1 4QD the plug holds some great gigs throughout the year that you should check out & try and get a slot supporting if you are an up and coming local band. Mostly putting on student nights The Plug is a top venue as well if you just want a night out in Sheffield.

Corporation established in 1997 is one of the UK's leading music venues, winning Best Club Night in the UK, for DROP on Friday nights in Metal Hammer. With Kerrang. voting Corporation in the top three UK rock night clubs it is totally the place to get yourself to. With some of the best rock acts drawn from all around the UK you should certainly be trying to get your band supporting one of these bands and with over 120 gig nights a year, there will be a gig you can get yourselves supporting. Located at 2 Milton Street, S1 4JU, Corporation should be a regular destination on gig night for any serious rock musician in Sheffield.
